Internship Note: Today I wrote an interesting News article about a relatively new up-and-coming indie advertising agency called Town Square, which has caused a stir in the industry as the agency has managed to snap up some relatively big names from other major agencies. This article was specifically interesting to me as it gave insight into some of the leading persons in advertising, as well as delineated the different attitudes agencies hold in regards to company goals and creative approach. The following is the News article I wrote for AdNews.
Indie creative agency Town Square has hired The Core Agency's Jane Callister as managing director and Clemenger BBDO Melbourne's Neville Doyle as chief strategy officer.
Based in Melbourne, Town Square is a mid-size, full-service creative agency working with brands across Australia since 2004, including clients such as APT, The Big Issue, Captain’s Choice, Frasers Property, Tasman Butchers, Visit Ballarat, Visit Victoria, Sovereign Hill and Weir Minerals.
Doyle and Callister will join Town Square’s management team of partners Danielle Moeller and Corsham, as well as creative directors Brendan Day and Gareth Davies.
Corsham says these hires will be key to driving growth at the agency, which currently sits at 40
people, and delivering "new strategic and creative opportunities" to its clients.
“These appointments increase our leadership bandwidth and add further depth to our expertise, particularly in strategic planning and innovation," he says.
"Our growth ambition is to develop better, more innovative and more diverse creative ideas for a growing roster of great clients. That means building further on our range of capabilities. We may consider opening a second office but it’s not a priority for us at this point."
Returning to Melbourne, Callister joins Town Square tasked with driving new business in the newly created role of managing director.
She joins from The Core Agency in Sydney where she worked for over three years.
During her more than 20 year career in the industry, Callister has held senior management positions at several agencies in both Sydney and Melbourne, including TBWA, M&C Saatchi, DDB, The Campaign Palace, Grey, George Patterson and JWT.
“I’m happy to be coming home to Melbourne and excited about the opportunity to work alongside Danielle, Harry and the rest of the team to drive their ambitious plans to grow the agency,” says Callister.
“The produce excellent and effective work and the prospect of building that is something I’m relishing.”
Doyle joins Town Square after two years at Clemenger BBDO Melbourne, where he worked as a planning director across Mars, CUB, Airbnb and Drinkwise. Prior to that he held the same role at sister agency Colenso BBDO in Auckland for four years.
“The chance to build a team and shape the strategy for Town Square’s clients is something that I am truly excited about,” says Doyle.
“Having worked at several multinational agencies, I’m looking forward to getting stuck in an ambitious independent agency, and the chance to help build and shape something exciting.
“The team at Town Square shares my passion for great creative work and we look forward to putting that passion into practice."
Doyle starts immediately, with Callister beginning in October.
